Oil based or Water-Based Floor Finishes – Which should you choose and use?

Polyurethane coatings help protect timber flooring by absorbing scuffs scratches and dents. The two types of polyurethane coatings on the market are Oil Based and Water Based.

So, which should you choose for your floor? While both types of coating have their pros and cons – they will both most certainly protect your timber floor.

During the application process the section of the floor being coated must be vacated for a few days to not breathe in harmful VOC’s. Applicator must wear proper respiratory equipment. In some cases, odour can linger for days and weeks after application.
Cost – Depends on how many applicator trips and contractor prices for job.More expensive than Oil based.Can save money if doing yourself. Cheaper than WB coatings.

No matter which floor coating you opt for, both will provide impressive results! Both flooring options will provide a smooth looking finish and long-lasting durability. Whether you opt for Oil or water based, you must still consider preventative care and maintenance. Use rugs and floor mats in high traffic areas. Place Pads on furniture legs to avoid scratches and regularly sweep and vacuum to keep grit away. If pets live indoors, ensure nails are trimmed and avoid heels on the floor.
